Why You Should Choose To Study At The
University of Aberdeen

#1 Campus and Facilities

The University of Aberdeen was founded in 1495, making it the 5th oldest in the UK and 3rd oldest in Scotland. We just celebrated our 525th anniversary!!!

Aberdeen University has a beautiful campus! Some of the old buildings are still here and give you that AMAZING feeling of studying at an old British university – bring on the Harry Potter feels!

BUT, there are also many brand-new modern facilities, such as the Sir Duncan Rice Library (one of the coolest libraries you´ll ever see!) and Aberdeen Sports Village (with Olympic-standard swimming pools, running tracks, etc.). Plus, an exciting prospect for all incoming science students, they are currently building a new science teaching hub which looks like it´s going to be absolutely amazing (kinda jealous I won´t be able to use it).

#2 Loads of Sports Clubs and Societies

I was so surprised when I came to the University of Aberdeen and saw how many different sports clubs and societies there were! Have you ever even heard of such a thing as underwater hockey or considered trying clay pigeon shooting? Or wondered what it would be like join the whiskey tasting or swing dance society? I´m not kidding, there is literally a society for everything you could think of and every sport you could ever want to try out! And sports clubs and societies are great ways to meet people with similar interests and make new friends!

Make sure to attend the Fresher´s fayre to see what´s on offer, or you could check out the student association website (click here to see the sports clubs and here for the societies). Also, check out my post on 6 Reasons Why You Should Join A University Sports Club.

#3 Teaching

As you will know from school, a teacher can make or break a subject.

I can only speak from the point of view of someone studying medical sciences, of course, but for us teaching is fantastic! We have some amazing lecturers that are so enthusiastic about their subjects there is no way they cannot infect you with their excitement! Everyone is really friendly, approachable and always willing to help you out! I think good relationships between students and lecturers are essential for enjoying your time at university, so that is definitely a reason to choose to study at the University of Aberdeen!

#4 Aberdeen City is Great for Students

Aberdeen is the perfect city for students, and with two universities (the other being Robert Gordon University), the city has a really high student population.

Aberdeen has everything you could ever need, with three shopping centres in town, as well as cafés, restaurants, pubs, night clubs, etc. Anything you could possibly think of – and it´s all within walking distance!!! If you are looking for an even greater cultural experience, there are loads of cinemas, theaters, museums and art galleries, too (click here for more info).

Even the weather is pretty good here compared to other places in Scotland. It can be quite windy but we have a lot less rain and more sunshine!

And the BEST thing about studying in Aberdeen is that you are next to the SEA! I cannot tell you how amazing it is to be able to go for a walk along the beach whenever you want! As pictures say more than 1000 words, I´ll just leave you with a few impressions below.

#5 University Rankings

It´s really not all about rankings. You should choose a university based on your specific course and if you think you will feel at home there. In my opinion, the things I mentioned above like teaching and the social part of university life are far more important than any ranking.

But even if you look at some of the university rankings, the University of Aberdeen does quite well! Not only was it named Scottish University of the Year (2019), but it is also one of the Top 30 Universities in the UK. It is quite highly ranked for Dentistry, Medicine and Medical Sciences. And from my own personal experience, I can confirm it is really good!

One important thing though, is that Aberdeen University is also ranked highly for graduate employability. In this guide here it was ranked 2nd in the UK in 2018!

#6 Four Year Undergraduate Degrees

Another reason why you should choose to study at the University of Aberdeen is that an undergraduate course here is spread out over four years (unlike in England where it´s three years). Third and fourth year are very work-intense, but the workload in second and especially first year is a lot less. That gives you plenty of time to settle into your new home, make new friends, join loads of clubs and societies and just enjoy the social aspect of university life a bit before you start knuckling down and studying for your degree.

Plus, you don´t have to worry about paying for that extra year if you are a Scottish or EU student, since tuition here is free (see reason #9)!

#7 Bonnie Scotland

I am biased of course, but Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world! Studying in Aberdeen, you´ll have the opportunity to experience the culture, food, and breath-taking scenery of this lovely country! Some amazing places to visit are just a stone´s through away, for example, Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven (no pun intended there, guys!).

Also, other large cities in Scotland like Edinburgh or Glasgow are only a 2-3 hour train journey away. And a trip up North to the highlands and some of the isles (e.g. the Isle of Skye) should definitely be on your to-do-list if you come and study here!

#8 International Campus. Come here, go anywhere.

Come here, go anywhere. That´s what we are frequently reminded of here! Not only are there loads of opportunities for you to study or find placements abroad (click here to find out more), but you will also meet people from all over the world right on campus!

With so many international lectures and students in Aberdeen, you´ll come into contact with a great diversity of people, languages, and cultures! I think I have met people from every country in Europe here, as well as many other places in the world! This makes studying at the University of Aberdeen a unique international experience!

#9 It´s free (kind of)

Are you an EU student that wants to study in the UK to improve your English? Absolutely stunned by the £9250 tuition fees at English/Welsh universities? Then come to Scotland and STUDY FOR FREE (you will of course still need to pay for living costs etc.)!

If you are classified as a home (Scottish) or EU student (N.B. This DOES NOT apply to English/Welsh/N. Irish and Overseas students), then you don´t have to pay tuition fees! You can apply for them to be covered by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). So, yet another reason why you should choose to study at the University of Aberdeen!
