Bake Off Box #3 Review
Bake Off Box #3 Review

This is the third month of the Bake Off Box and this month’s box was a real success! The recipe was easy to follow, tasted delicious and the special baking equipment was fantastic!

For those of you who haven´t heard, the Great British Bake Off has released the concept of the Bake Off Box, which is available for monthly subscription and contains the dry ingredients for a special recipe, as well as a bespoke piece of baking equipment!

I thought a lot of you might be interested in finding out more about the Bake Off Box content, the recipe and the equipment that comes with it, so I thought I would film the “experience” and write up a review each month for you!

*Just a quick disclaimer before we start: This post isn´t sponsored (I wish!) and I am not getting paid for anything I have said. It´s just my own personal opinion and experience.*

Check out the unboxing and baking video here:

This Month´s Bake Off Box Content

In the April Bake Off Box, I received the ingredients to make a Lemon Tray Bake (which they call “Lemony Lemon Slices” and a microplane grater. This traybake was very quick and easy to make and was perfect for the spring/summer time!

The Bake Off Box Microplane Grater/Long-handed Zester

April’s piece of “bespoke baking equipment” was a microplane grater, or as they called it, a “long-handed zester”. And let me tell you, it is the BEST grater I have ever had! The blade is extremely sharp and it zested the lemons so easily! I was very positively surprised by this, as I have had microplane graters before that have been absolutely useless! This long-handed zester is definitely the best piece of baking equipment I have received in the Bake Off Box so far!

The Lemony Lemon Slices Ingredients

This Bake Off Box came with 3 sachets of dry ingredients for the recipe, one with caster sugar, one with a mix of self-raising flour and baking powder, and one with fondant icing sugar. The box also came with a little jar of lemon curd for the cake, as well as some candied lemon rounds for decorating. The few fresh ingredients you had to supply yourself were eggs, butter, lemons, and milk (I used dairy-free versions this time). I did have to use a little bit of additional icing sugar though, as I didn’t think there was quite enough icing to cover the whole cake! So this month’s ingredients are fairly inexpensive, both the ones I were sent and the additional ingredients I had to provide. This definitely provides a great incentive to make this recipe again!

The Recipe

This month’s recipe was very easy to follow (suitable for beginners) and the result tasted fantastic! I will definitely be making these Lemony Lemon Slices again – I dare say this recipe might be better than Mary Berry’s Lemon Drizzle Cake?!?!

To make this month’s recipe, I used dairy-free/vegan butter and lactose free milk as one of my friends who I was wanting to share this with is lactose intolerant! It still worked perfectly well, and the recipe was great to follow! All I think the recipe needed was a little more icing for the top of the cake, but I have included any changes I would make to the recipe post here.

Pros and Cons of April´s Bake Off Box

Cons

The only real con to this month’s Bake Off Box was its lateness! Every month the box has been arriving a little later, but this month I didn’t receive it until the 22nd of April! And because I then had exams, I never got round to baking the Lemon Slices until May! However, it was worth the wait though (see below).

One other thing I might say, is that the recipe was not particularly challenging. Last month’s recipe, the Mini Walnut and Banana Loaf Cakes, was also fairly easy , too. So these past few months haven’t necessarily been a “challenge” for a more experienced baker like myself (without trying to sound too cocky), but I think next month’s recipe is going to be a bit trickier!

Pros

Besides the general things I have mentioned in previous months, for example that you are given the exact quantities of the ingredients you are given so that you can make the recipe again, I LOVED the contents of April’s Bake Off Box!

This month’s recipe was extremely easy to follow and quick to make, and I loved the idea of adding lemon curd to the cake to make it even more lemony!

Finally, I was super impressed by this month’s bespoke piece of baking equipment, the long-handed zester/microplane! I absolutely love it and it is by far the best piece of equipment I have received in the box so far!

Cost of the Bake Off Box and Where to Get It

The Bake Off Box is available from their website here and costs about 20£/month. That covers the ingredients, equipment and packaging/postage. You will also have to bear in mind that you might have to buy some additional ingredients. This month, however, it was very basic ingredients that you had to add and most people probably have these at home anyway (eggs, butter, milk and lemons)! In total, the cost for the extra ingredients this month wouldn’t have been more than £3-4.

I hope you enjoyed this post about the content of the third Bake Off Box! Make sure to check out my previous Bake Off Box posts, and stay tuned for these posts at the start of the next few months! If you have any other questions in the meantime, just leave a comment under this post!
