Bake Off Box #10 Review

I cannot believe it… This is Bake Off Box Number 10 and will also be my last ever Bake Off Box that I receive! The Bake Off Box will be discontinued as of 2022 and I unfortunately missed to order the final December box in time before it was sold out…  This month’s box, however, was quite good because it came with the recipe for my all-time favourite dessert: Sticky Toffee Pudding!

For those of you who haven´t heard of it before, the Great British Bake Off has released the concept of the Bake Off Box, which is available for monthly subscription and contains the dry ingredients for a special recipe, as well as a bespoke piece of baking equipment!

I thought a lot of you might be interested in finding out more about the Bake Off Box content, the recipe and the equipment that comes with it, so I thought I would film the “experience” and write up a review each month for you!

*Just a quick disclaimer before we start: This post isn´t sponsored (I wish!) and I am not getting paid for anything I have said. It´s just my own personal opinion and experience.*

This Month´s Bake Off Box Content

In the November Bake Off Box, I received the ingredients to make a large Sticky Toffee Pudding served with a Toffee Sauce and Vanilla Crème Anglaise (custard).

The Bake Off Box Baking Equipment

The November Bake Off Box’s special piece of equipment was a balloon whisk. It is quite a sturdy metal whisk, which I will admit is hard to come by, and has a silicone handle in the Bake Off Box blue colour. While I quite like the whisk and do think it is better than my current one, I am slightly disappointed that we didn’t receive the traybake tin instead. As I had already mentioned in my review of the October Bake Off Box, the pictures in the run-up to the box being released, showed the Focaccia bread then, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding now, being made in their traybake tin.

This tin is available to purchase from the Bake Off Box website, but it would have been great to receive it in the box. Especially as you could have used for both the Focaccia and the Sticky Toffee Pudding recipes. But as this wasn’t the case, I used my usual go-to Brownie traybake tin for the two recipes instead. I can thoroughly recommend this tin as I have been using it for years, so if you are interested in buying one you can find it here.

The Sticky Toffee Pudding Ingredients

The November box came with some really good ingredients that I think made the box worthwhile financially this month. The box came with self-raising flour and light muscovado sugar, as well as dates and vanilla extract.

Dates are actually quite expensive, especially when you need 270g of them, so it was actually really great that the box came with these! I also liked the added luxury of them being pre-chopped. Not that you can’t chop them yourselves, but dates can be sticky too work with and it just meant that you saved a couple minutes, and didn’t have to wash an extra knife and chopping board! XD Always a bonus if there is less washing up to do 😉

I was also happy that the box came with vanilla extract. Vanilla extract is becoming increasingly expensive, and I feel like I am constantly having to buy it as I go through mine very quicky. Maybe a sign I should start baking less? XD You definitely need quite a lot of vanilla to make the custard taste of it (as it should) so it was nice that the box came with enough for that!

The Recipe

I only made Sticky Toffee Pudding recently, as it was a Technical Challenge in Week 4 of the 2021 Bake Off. You can find the recipe for Prue’s Individual Sticky Toffee Puddings here. I know these past three boxes were inspired by Bake Off, but it was a shame that this one was based on the technical challenge, as I had already made something similar as part of my bake-along…

However, this recipe was slightly different as it made one large Sticky Toffee Pudding, rather than four individual small ones. I also loved that in this recipe, the base of the toffee sauce was a caramel made with light brown rather than caster sugar, and that some brown sugar was also added to the custard!

If you want to give this recipe a try, check out the recipe post here and the video here!

Pros and Cons of November´s Bake Off Box

Cons

As I mentioned above, I think my main disappointment with this and also last month’s box was the fact that it did not contain a traybake tin. That said though, the whisk is still pretty good (and better than last month’s measuring spoons) and at least the ingredients from this month’s box where a bit more expensive and made the box seem more worth it in terms of the cost.

Pros

Apart from not getting the traybake tin, I did really like this month’s box! I absolutely love Sticky Toffee Pudding, so even though I had already made some a few weeks ago, I still enjoyed making and of course eating it! The whisk that came in the box is quite sturdy and I will definitely make good use of it. Finally, I also thought that the ingredients provided in the box were good, as dates and also vanilla extract are expensive to purchase yourself!

Cost of the Bake Off Box and Where to Get It

The Bake Off Box is available from their website here and costs about 20£/month. That covers the ingredients, equipment and packaging/postage. You will also have to bear in mind that you might have to buy some additional ingredients. This month, you needed to provide 8 eggs (3 whole and 5 yolks), double cream, whole milk and unsalted butter. Overall, I’d say that the additional costs for the box were about £5-7. However, this recipe would serve around 8 people for dessert, so you do get quite a lot out of it!

I hope you enjoyed this post about the content of the 10th Bake Off Box! Make sure to check out my previous Bake Off Box posts below! If you have any other questions in the meantime, just leave a comment under this post!
