10 university bedroom essentials list

Are you moving to university this September? Will you be moving into your own flat or student accommodation? Well then you’ll probably be wondering what items to pack for your bedroom.
Here’s a list of 10 bedroom essentials for you university room!

Top Tip:
If you are moving into student accommodation/halls, then remember to check their website first. See what items are already provided (e.g. bin, desk lamp) to make sure you don´t bring items you already have.

10 University Bedroom Essentials

Moving into Halls

1) Duvet, Pillows and Bedsheets

Obviously, you will need a duvet, pillows and sheets for your bed. Remember to check the accommodation website to see what size the bed will be (single, ¾ , double, etc.). I would recommend buying two sets of bedsheets. That way, whilst you´re washing one set you can already make your bed again with the other. Plus, it will give you a bit of a change!

You might also want to buy/bring a cosy blanket for winter or for movie nights on the sofa with your flatmates. Check out more things to do to bond with your flatmates here.

2) Mattress Protector

I really recommend buying a mattress protector/mattress topper. Because who knows who was lying in that bed before you?!🤣 Probably best not to think about it… Plus, a mattress protector will also give you an extra layer of comfort, because mattresses in halls aren´t always the most comfortable.

3) Doorstop

You might have already read about bring a doorstop in my post about 10 tips for moving into university halls.
Most (if not all) doors in university halls are fire doors and are on a strong hinge. The doors can be extremely heavy and them closing every time you enter your room can be extremely annoying.

So, I´d advise you to bring a heavy, non-slip doorstop with you. Not only does a doorstop make moving things in and out of your room easier, but it also allows you to keep your door propped open.

4) Laundry bag/hamper (with handles!)

You´ll have to put your dirty washing somewhere and, trust me, the floor or bottom of your wardrobe aren´t the best places… So, definitely invest in a small laundry bag/hamper that has some handles on it to make it easy to carry. Sometimes in university accommodation, the washing machines/laundry rooms can be in a different building to where you are staying, so you´ll want an easy way to transport your dirty clothes from one place to another.

5) Overdoor Hangers

As there probably isn´t a lot of space in your room at university, overdoor hangers are a great way to hang up jackets/coats, bags and towels in order to keep them out of the way. I have an overdoor hanger in my room for bags and coats, and one in my bathroom to hang up my shower towel. Find a list of other items you might have not thought of bringing in my first tip of this post here.

6) Extra Storage

Sometimes, the amount of storage space provided in university halls can be limited. Often, there is a bookshelf and some drawers in the desk, but nothing more. Especially for the bathroom, it might be useful to buy an additional storage box or two. In first year, I even bought a small chest of drawers from IKEA, just to have a little extra storage space. Here is a link to the one I bought.

7) Desk Lamp and Paper Bin

For this, definitely check the description of the accommodation online before you buy them. You don´t want to end up with two! The paper bin you get in halls (if you do) should be fine, but you might need a small pedal bin for the bathroom. The desk lamp you are given in halls can be a little crap sometimes. So even though a (crap) lamp was provided, I bought myself a really good one, also from IKEA, called Forsa. It’s a really good light and I haven’t had to change the bulb once in the three years I´ve been using it!

8) Extension Cable

If you are unlucky, there won´t be a lot of electricity sockets in your room, or they are in very inconvenient places! Hence why an extension cable is often a good idea! I bought this one, with 4 sockets that have individual on and off switches.

9) Slippers

Not only are slippers good for cold winter days, but I can tell you one thing: YOU DO NOT WANT TO WALK AROUND THE SHARED KITCHEN IN YOUR SOCKS/BARE FEET. Flat kitchen floors can be extremely disgusting, I guarantee you won´t want to walk around them with your socks on – unless of course you like being stuck to the ground by spilled apple juice…

10) Fotos, Lights and Bluetack/Command Hooks

You´ll probably want to decorate your room with a few pictures to make it feel more homely or hang up some fairy lights over your bed. Bringing some string, blue tack, or command hooks will be extremely helpful for hanging them up. Your room might also come with a cork board, so bring a few drawing pins to hang things up there, too!

Those are my top 10 university bedroom essentials; I hope you find this post helpful! If you are wondering what kitchen items to buy, please also check out my list of kitchen essentials. Or read my packing guide for moving to university to find out more about what clothes etc. to bring from home!
