It´s time for Bake Off Box Number 8 and this month’s box came with the dry ingredients, equipment, and recipe for Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mini Rolls! And yep – they tasted as good as they sound!
For those of you who haven´t heard of it before, the Great British Bake Off has released the concept of the Bake Off Box, which is available for monthly subscription and contains the dry ingredients for a special recipe, as well as a bespoke piece of baking equipment!
I thought a lot of you might be interested in finding out more about the Bake Off Box content, the recipe and the equipment that comes with it, so I thought I would film the “experience” and write up a review each month for you!
*Just a quick disclaimer before we start: This post isn´t sponsored (I wish!) and I am not getting paid for anything I have said. It´s just my own personal opinion and experience.*

This Month´s Bake Off Box Content
In the September Bake Off Box, I received the ingredients to make 8 Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mini Rolls.
The Bake Off Box Baking Equipment
The September Bake Off Box piece of equipment was a silicone baking mat that is 36.5 x 26cm in size. It’s dishwasher-safe but I also found it very easy to wash by hand. It’s larger than a standard Swiss roll tin and it not something I already own – so that’s a plus! I actually think that my Swiss roll tin is a bit small, so having this now is a great addition to my baking equipment collection! Haha, as if my baking cupboard wasn’t already groaning!
The Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mini Roll Ingredients
The September Bake Off Box came with most of the ingredients needed for the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mini Rolls. All you had to provide yourself was some eggs, a little double cream and butter and a teaspoon of salt! All the dry ingredients were obviously included in the box, so that was caster sugar, icing sugar, flour, cocoa powder and A LOT of chocolate. 400g of dark chocolate would be quite expensive if you bought the good-quality one for baking usually, so it was really good that it was provided.
The Recipe
I loved this recipe! It was challenging AND the end result tasted good.
I loved that there were multiple elements to this bake giving the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mini Rolls lots of different ‘dimensions’ and textures… Soft and fudgy chocolate sponge, smooth and creamy salted caramel buttercream, crunchy caramel chunks and a crisp chocolate coating.
The recipe called for making caramel twice, one that was left to set and chopped up to add some crunch to the Mini Rolls, and one that was turned into a salted caramel that was later added to the buttercream. I don’t think I’ve made anything like it before so that was really good!
The sponge was also tricky to master, as there was no raising agent in it. All the air came from whipped egg whites, so you had to be very careful not to knock out too much of the air when folding it into the rest of the sponge.
If you want to give the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mini Rolls yourself you can check out the recipe here.
Pros and Cons of June´s Bake Off Box
Cons
No complaints this month! The box arrived pretty much in time, I loved the recipe, loved the final product and my equipment!
Pros
This Bake Off Box, as well as the October and November ones, will be inspired by the Great British Bake Off as the new season has just started again on Channel 4! This means that the content and recipe will be a surprise until a few days before the box is shipped, and I think it is very exciting to be baking things inspired by the show! Especially as this year I am going to try and commit to a proper bake-along of all technical challenges (within reason that is, I won’t be making pita breads on an open fire!).
As I have mentioned above, I really liked this month’s Bake Off Box! The recipe was technically challenging and I liked the end result! I also really like the idea of baking along with the Great British Bake Off and that the recipe isn’t revealed in advance as it was for the first few boxes. I have never made Mini Rolls before, only a large Swiss roll (recipe here) so it was great that the box “made” me try them.
Cost of the Bake Off Box and Where to Get It
The Bake Off Box is available from their website here and costs about 20£/month. That covers the ingredients, equipment and packaging/postage. You will also have to bear in mind that you might have to buy some additional ingredients. This month, you needed to provide large eggs, some double cream, butter and a teaspoon of salt, so it probably wouldn’t have been more than £2-3 of extra costs!
I hope you enjoyed this post about the content of the 8th Bake Off Box! Make sure to check out my previous Bake Off Box posts, and stay tuned for these posts at the start of the next few months! If you have any other questions in the meantime, just leave a comment under this post!
