5 Tips for Revision Week | Exam Preparation
With exams fast approaching, it´s time to get ready for revision week and start with your exam preparation!
The lectures, labs and (hopefully!) assignments are over and done with – now the focus turns to the last hurdle: Exams!
Just think of it this way, in a month it will all be over, and we can look forward to Christmas!
Next week is revision week, which is why I want to share with you some tips on how to make the best of this time for exam preparation.
Let´s get straight into it:
1) Write-up a Study Plan
It´s hard to dive right into revision without a real plan of what to do. Think of what needs to be done and write it down!
Have you gone over all the lectures for the course? Did you finish all the tutorial questions? Have you got any extra reading to do?
Take your time to write down everything you need to do and make sure you prioritise. What is an absolute must and what could be done only if you have the time?
Lists are not only useful to remember everything you need to do, but it´s also extremely satisfying to score off the things you have already done!
2) Make good use of all the materials provided
There is usually so much material you can use for your revision, you might not even have time to go through it all! Lecture slides, tutorial sheets, lab manuals, textbooks, etc.
Apart from obviously making sure you have covered all the lecture materials, I would really recommend looking at past papers (if they are available). If you are studying at the University of Aberdeen, you can find past papers here.
Not only are they great for revision purposes, but they will also give you a good idea of what you might be asked in the exam. Try to think of possible questions you may be asked, as this could direct your revision in the right direction.
If you are studying a science subject, I´d also recommend you go over any calculations you may need to do and re-do some of your tutorial questions once (or even twice!). The more practice you get, the easier and faster it will be to do them in the exam!
3) Make studying efficient
Try to make your studying as efficient as possible, to avoid spending hours at your desk that aren’t really necessary. I find I can avoid this with a few simple strategies.
For one, I start by getting rid of any distractions. That often involves hiding my phone or leaving the house to study, so that I don´t have the possibility of wandering off to the kitchen and ending up having an hour-long conversation with my flatmate (trust me – it happens!).
Try and find the best place for you to study. Maybe you are able to concentrate best when you are at home, or perhaps you prefer studying in a café. I tend to go to the library, as I like being around other people studying, but still want a fairly quiet environment. Plus, it´s great to have any textbook at hand that I may want to look at!
4) Take some time to relax and have fun!
It´s important to also remember to take some time to relax during revision week. Yes, you may need to get a lot of work done, but it´s impossible to concentrate and study all the time! Make some time for fun things, perhaps meet some of your friends, have an evening out or go and play your favourite sport! You could also try to do some Christmas baking, that´s what I like to do to relax. Check out one of my recipes for Christmas biscuits here.
5) Meal Prep
During revision week and the exam period, you may not have time/be bothered to cook. Why not try making some food that will last a few days in the fridge or can easily be frozen? That way, when you don´t have time to cook, you can just get something out of the fridge/freezer and be good to go! For some student meal prep recipes check out this post here.
